It’s an age-old question: does the perfect remix truly exist? Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album provides one of the most radical - and controversial - of answers. Remix one of The Beatles’ most famous LPs, The White Album, laced with selected a cappellas by Jay-Z and you obtain a critically acclaimed bootleg which, despite some incoherences, manages to provide striking glimpses into the endless possibilities - and beauty - inherent to remixing.
Think about it. Jay-Z’s a cappella album was purposely brought out to inspire people from all over the world to create a new backdrop to his lyrics. Aesop Rock has done the same thing, as well as putting out tracks and throwing contests to see who will remix them best.
